1978 Tournament Final Game 4 – Yankees vs Padres

Game 4 has a pitching matchup of Ron Guidry (25-3 1.74 Grade 24) versus Bob Owchinko (10-13 3.56 Grade 9) for the Padres.

Pitchers control the first three innings until the Yankees finally break through for 2 in the 4th. Graig Nettles with a long 2 run homer. The Padres finally scratched a run off Guidry in the 6th as Ozzie Smith scores on an error by Lou Piniella.  Score would remain 2-1 until 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th and Gene Tenace would line a solo homer off Guidry to tie the game. Incredible!

The dramatic homer sends the game to extras as the relievers hold the fort down until the 13th. Once again as he did in the regular season and as he has done in this playoff Bucky Dent hits a solo homer. Goose Gossage pitches 3 inning getting the last 3 outs for the win and a commanding 3-1 lead in the series.

Final Score: Yankees 3, Padres 2 (13)

WP: Goose Gossage (5)

LP: Mark Lee (0-3)

HR’s: Yankees – Graig Nettles (3), Bucky Dent (3) Padres – Gene Tenace (3)
