1980 Playoff Replay – ALCS – Game 3 – Royals at Yankees

Must win Game 3 has the Yankees sending Tommy John (22-9 3.43 Grade 13Z) to the mound opposite Paul Splittorff (14-11 4.15 Grade 6Z) for the Roayls.

 

The Yankees come out with their backs against the wall and score the first run of the game as Reggie Jackson singles in Bucky Dent. The Royals would answer with 3 huge runs in the 2nd as Frank White would rip a John fastball over the left field wall for a 3 run homer. The Royals would keep pounding the ball in the 3rd as they would put up 5 more runs. Hal McRae hits a double to drive in George Brett, White drives in 2 more with a single and Willie Wilson drives in White.

 

The Royals would keep piling it on in the 5th with another 2 spot. Darrell Porter with a solo homer off Ron Davis the big hit. With the score 9-1, Splitorff would take care of the rest allowing only one more run in the complete game win. Royals sweep 3-0. The Royals celebrate on the infield of Yankee Stadium as they move onto the World Series to face either the Astros or the Phillies.
