Home / 1985 / 1985 Tournament Final – Game 4 – Mets @ Dodgers

Mets win Game 3 to get back into the series and they send Ron Darling (16-6 2.90 Grade 15Y) to the mound against Orel Hershiser (19-3 2.03 Grade 20YZG).

The Mets once again get on the board first in the 2nd as Darling would help himself by singling in Rafael Santana. In the 3rd the Mets would get a huge 2 out RBI by Knight to make it 2-0 Mets. The offense wasn’t done as they get 2 more off Hershiser in the 4th as Wally Backman would double in Lenny Dykstra and Gary Carter would double in Backman.

The Dodgers would answer in the bottom half of the 4th. A single by Pedro Guerrero would bring Greg Brock to the plate and he would take Darling out to right to cut the lead in half at 4-2. The Mets kept the onslaught of Hershiser going in the 5th scoring again via an error by Guerrero. Guerrero trying to throw a runner out at 3rd throws it into the dug out. With the score 5-2 Mets the Dodgers would make their move on the bottom of the 5th. With Steve Sax on 1st, Mariano Duncan would ground to short for a potential double play ball but he would boot it and the Dodgers would make them pay dearly. Mike Scioscia would single in a run, Mike Marshall would single in 2 runs. Guerrero would give the Dodgers a lead with a 2 run single to make it a 6-5 game.

The Mets would not go down easy. In the 8th, Rusty Staub would pinch single and go to second on an error by Marshall. Pinch runner Larry Bowa would score on a Backman single to tie the game. With Roger McDowell in the game in the 9th the Dodger offense would get going again. Sax would single to lead off the inning. Enos Cabell would provide a pinch hit single to make it 1 and 3rd with no outs. With the infield and outfield in McDowell would strike out Duncan. The Mets then intentionally walked Scioscia to set the stage for Marshall. Marshall would take the McDowell sinker off the wall in left for a walk off 7-6 victory for the Dodgers and get them to one win away from the championship.
