APBA 1988 ALCS Replay – Game 1 – Oakland’s A’s vs Boston Red Sox

Big time matchup in this ALCS between the Western Division Champion Oakland A’s (104-58) and the Eastern Division Champion Boston Red Sox (89-73).

Game 1’s pitching matchup is Dave Stewart (20-13 3.68 Grade 15Y) for the A’s versus Bruce Hurst (18-6 3.66 Grade 11YZ) for the Red Sox.

The A’s would come out of the gate and grab the lead in the first as Jose Canseco would double to left and Mark McGwire would single up the middle to bring him home. The Red Sox would get that run right back in the bottom as Todd Benzinger would double in Wade Boggs. In the 3rd the Red Sox would get to Stewart again Marty Barrett would single in Rich Gedman and Benzinger again would double this time driving in 2 to give the Sox a 4-1 lead.

In the 5th the A’s would chip away at the lead as Hurst would field a grounder and throw it down the right field line to score Tony Phillips. In the 6th McGwire would take a Hurst pitch over the Green Monster to make it a 4-3 game. In the bottom of the 6th the Red Sox would knock Stewart out of the game and score a huge insurance run. Barrett again would single up the middle this time scoring Jody Reed.

With the score 5-3 the Red Sox bullpen would close the deal Bob Stanley pitches an inning and Lee Smith comes in and gets the save to give the Red Sox a huge Game 1 win. No sweep in our replay as they look to take a 2-0 advantage before heading to Oakland.

Final Score: Red Sox 5, A’s 3

WP: Bruce Hurst (1-0)

LP: Dave Stewart (0-1)

Save: Lee Smith (1)
