APBA 1988 ALCS Replay – Game 4 – Boston Red Sox vs Oakland’s A’s

Broken record, but another great game! A’s lead 2-1 in the series and send ace Dave Stewart (21-12 3.23 Grade 15YG) to the mound against lefty Bruce Hurst (18-6 3.66 Grade 11YZ).

The Red Sox come out of the gate and grab a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Wade Boggs would double with 2 outs and Mike Greenwell would double to deep right center scoring Boggs. The A’s would come back and tie the game in the second as Terry Steinbach doubles, Don Baylor singles, and Mike Gallego hits a sac fly to center that scores Steinbach under the tag of Rich Gedman.

The veteran pitchers would settle down and dominate as we would stay 1-1 into the 9th inning. After Stewart sets them down in order in the top of the 9th, Hurst would toe the mound in the bottom half. Hurst would issue a walk to Steinbach and the Red Sox would go to their bullpen and get Bob Stanley. Stanley would face Baylor who would single to left to make it first and second with no outs. Stanley would recover to strike out Gallego as he failed to get the bunt down. Walt Weiss would then ground into a force to make it 1st and 3rd with 2 outs. The Red Sox would intentionally walk Carney Lansford as they like the matchup against Stan Javier better. Javier would line the first pitch to center to win the game as the Red Sox bullpen has taken losses in the last 3 games and now trail 3 games to 1. (For you dice players the dice roll would have been a hit for Lansford or Javier).

Final Score: A’s 2, Red Sox 1

WP: Dave Stewart (1-1)

LP: Bruce Hurst (1-1)

HR’s: None
