APBA 1988 NLCS Replay – Game 1 – New York Mets @ Los Angeles Dodgers

The NLCS features the New York Mets (100-60) winners of the NL East versus the Los Angeles Dodgers (94-67) winners of the NL West. The Mets send Dwight Gooden (18-9 3.19 Grade 14YZG)  to the mound against Cy Young winner Orel Hershiser (23-8 2.26 Grade 19 YZ).

 

The Dodgers would come out and grab the early lead with a run in the 1st as Frankin Stubbs would single in Steve Sax. In the 2nd they would score 3 off Gooden to open up a 4-0 lead. Big 2 out run scoring hits by Stubbs and Kirk Gibson the big blows. In the 5th the Dodger would get an insurance run as John Shelby would double off the center field wall scoring Mike Marshall.

 

Hershiser was on cruise control with a 5 run lead and only allowing 2 hits through 6 innings. In the 7th the Mets would try to make some noise as Gregg Jefferies would single in front of a Darryl Strawberry homer to right. Hershiser would settle after that retiring the next 7 batters in a row to secure the 5-2 victory and the 1-0 series advantage for the Dodgers.
