Game 4 – 1978 Tournament Replay White Sox vs Tigers

1978, 1978 Tournament, Tigers, White Sox
Game 4 a must win for the White Sox as they send veteran Wilbur Wood (10-10 5.20 Grade 2), while the Tigers counter with a veteran of their own in Jack Billingham (15-8 3.88 Grade 8). This game was nuts, total insanity. The Tigers get a quick run in the first via sac fly from Rusty Staub. The White Sox would strike hard in the 3rd with a 6 spot. 3 run homer by Eric Soderholm the big blow. The score would remain 6-1 all the way until the top of the 8th until the Tigers bat around, knock Wood out of the game and plate 5 to tie the game. RBI's by Whitaker, Staub, and Thompson the key hits. The Tigers weren't done as they come back for 3…

Game 3 with the series tied and back to old Comiskey. Tigers send Dave Rozema (9-12 3.14 Grade 12) to the mound against Francisco Barrios (9-15 4.15 Grade 6). This game started with some sense of normalcy as the score was 0-0 through 3 innings. That quickly changed as the Tigers would score 3 in the 4th inning and 4 in the 5th inning to take a commanding 7-0 lead. Big hits by Rusty Staub and Alan Trammell lead the way. White Sox answer with 2 of their own including courtesy of another homer from Wayne Nordhagen. The 8th would see Ron LeFlore hit another homer in this series, this one a two run shot to put the game over sign up. Rozema goes 8 strong and the Tigers win…

Game 2 – 1978 Tournament Replay White Sox vs Tigers

1978, 1978 Tournament, Tigers, White Sox
Game 2 looking for some pitching has the White Sox sending Ken Kravec (11-16 4.08 Grade 6) to the mound while the Tigers look to Milt Wilcox (13-12 3.76 Grade 8). I have rolled many games in my time wtih APBA, I have had very few where the started never recorded an out. That is exactly what happened as the first 10 men to come to the plate for the Tigers reach and they score 7 in the first. Kravec's line 0 IP 7 Runs 7 Hits 3 BB's. Absolutely amazing. After the Tigers score 7 in the first (no extra base hits incidentally) ┬áthe White Sox come back with 2 in the 2nd, but the Tigers would get a solo homer from Ron LeFlore in the 6th and would…

Huge 2 run double by Chet Lemon the big blow. Tigers would answer with 2 of their own in the bottom half courtesy of a double by Rusty Staub. After 1 inning we had a…

Cleveland still facing elimination sends Donnie Hood (5-6 4.48 Grade 3) to the mound while Chicago sends veteran left Wilbur Wood (10-10 5.20 Grade 2). Another solid performance by both pitcher as Wood only gives up 2 runs in 6+ and Hood goes 8+ strong only giving up one run. The Indians took a 4-1 1 lead going into the 9th and closer Jim Kern on the mound. The first 2 batters reach in the top of the 9th and after hitting only 5 homers in the regular season utility man Wayne Nordhagen launches a 3 run homer to tie the game at 4. The White Sox had a chance to take the lead later in the inning but Ralph Garr was cut down at the plate by Paul Dade.…

Indians would jump out on top 2-0 after scoring 1 run in the bottom of the first and the second. Including Bernie Carbo's homer in the second frame. White Sox would get on the board with a run in the 5th, but Cleveland would answer back with a 4 spot in the 6th. This was more than enough for Paxton as he goes the distance in the 6-1 win. Cleveland in the hole 1-0 sends Rick Wise (9-19 4.34 Grade 5) to the mound countered by Ken Kravec (11-16 4.08 Grade 6) for the Sox. Both teams brought the bats for this one as Chicago opened the scoring with a 3 spot in the bottom of the 2nd. With the score 5-2 in the top of the 5th the Indians score 2 courtesy of a long 2 run homer by catcher Gary Alexander.
