Game 6 – 1985 Tournament Replay Tigers @ Mets

Game 6 back at Shea has the Tigers sending Dan Petry (15-13 3.36 Grade 12Z) against Sid Fernandez (9-9 2.80 Grade 10XY).

The Mets would get the first run of the game as Darryl Strawberry would hit yet another homer, this time the solo variety off Petry. Fernandez would cruise through the first 3 innings striking out 7 of the first 9 batters to face him. In the 4th the Tigers would start putting the bat on the ball and get a triple from Alan Trammell. Kirk Gibson would follow with the RBI single and Lance Parrish would double in Gibson to give the Tigers the 2-1 lead. Mets would get those right back in the botton half as Ray Knight would once again get a big RBI single, and Rafael Santana would hit a sac fly scoring Lenny Dykstra. With the score 3-2 Mets the Tigers would even it up in the 6th as Parrish would again drive in Gibson. The score would remain 3-3 as we would go to extras.

The 10th inning was nuts. Roger McDowell was on for the Mets and he would give up a single to Tom Brookens. Brookens would get sacrificed to second to bring up Lou Whitaker. This time the Mets would leave in McDowell instead of Orosco but the result was the same as Whitaker would deposit the McDowell splitter over the right field wall to give the Tigers the 5-3 lead. In the bottom of the 10th with Willie Hernandez already out of the game the Tigers turn to Aurilio Lopez. Senior smoke didn’t have the same year in 85 that he did in 84 and the Mets jump on him as Knight and George Foster would single. After a Mookie Wilson pop out that would bring up Wally Backman. Now Wally only hit 1 homer the entirety of 85 but he would take a Lopez pitch out of the park to give the Mets the 6-5 win and the 4-2 series win. Backman hit the homer off Lopez’s homer rating. Truly a crazy, crazy ending to this series.

Final Score: Mets 6, Tigers 5

WP: Roger McDowell (2-1)

LP: Aurilio Lopez (0-1)

HR’s: Tigers – Lou Whitaker (2), Mets – Wally Backman (1), Darryl Strawberry (6)
