Game 1 – 1978 Tournament Replay Mets vs Braves

The New York Mets the 24 seed and the Atlanta Braves the 23 seed are the next series in this play in round.

The Mets had a record of 66-96 and finished last in the NL East, while the Braves where 69-93 also finishing last in the NL West.

The starters for Game 1 are Jerry Koosman (3-15 3.75 Grade 8) vs. Phil Niekro (19-18 2.88 Grade 15).

Braves had their ace Niekro on the mound and got off to a good start on offense plating 3 in first highlighted be a Rowland Office 2 run homer. The Mets answered with 4 in the 3rd with a 3 run homer by Willie Montanez against the team he was an All-Star for in 1977. The Braves pounced back on top in the 5 with yet another homer by Rowland Office. The score would remain the same until the Mets reclaim the lead with 2 in the 8th and 4 in the  9th as Niekro and the Braves bullpen can’t hold the lead. Mets win 10-7 and take home field advantage while also beating the Braves ace.
