Game 4 – 1978 Tournament Replay White Sox vs Indians

game 4

Cleveland still facing elimination sends Donnie Hood (5-6 4.48 Grade 3) to the mound while Chicago sends veteran left Wilbur Wood (10-10 5.20 Grade 2). Another solid performance by both pitcher as Wood only gives up 2 runs in 6+ and Hood goes 8+ strong only giving up one run. The Indians took a 4-1 1 lead going into the 9th and closer Jim Kern on the mound. The first 2 batters reach in the top of the 9th and after hitting only 5 homers in the regular season utility man Wayne Nordhagen launches a 3 run homer to tie the game at 4. The White Sox had a chance to take the lead later in the inning but Ralph Garr was cut down at the plate by Paul Dade. We would go to extras where once again Jorge Orta would deliver the big hit with a single off Sid Monge to give the White Sox the 5-4 lead. Jim Willoughby would pitch the last 3 innings for the Sox for the win. What a comeback to take the series 3-1.

Final Score: White Sox 5, Indians 4

WP: Jim Willoughby (1-0)

LP: Sid Monge (0-1)

HR: Wayne Nordhagen (1)

Chicago wins 3-1. Next series is #18 Minnesota vs #17 Houston
