Padres beat the Cardinals 3-1 in this play in series. Game 1: Padres 4, Cardinals 1 Game 2: Padres 4, Cardinals 3 Game 3: Cardinals 9, Padres 6 Game 4: Padres 10, Cardinals 7 Fun series and will be interesting to see how the the Padres can do against their division rivals the Dodgers in the sweet 16. Series MVP: John D'Acquisto 2 bug wins in relief.

Game 3 is a must win for the Cardinals at home and they send righty Pete Vuckovich (12-12 2.54 Grade 15) to the hill against Eric Rasmussen (12-10 4.06 Grade 6) for the Padres. The Padres would strike first with a 2 out RBI from Gene Tenace. The Cards would score 2 runs in the 4th and the 5th, while the Padres would score 3 (Oscar Gamble bug 3 run homer) in the 5th. The Cardinals strike first in the 4th with a 2 spot, a 2 run homer by Jerry Morales the big hit. The Padres would answer with 2 of their own in the bottom half as Oscar Gamble drives in 2 with a base hit. This second round matchup is the #21 St. Louis Cardinals, whom beat the #22 Oakland A's in the first round and the #14 San Diego Padres. Winner of this series will move onto face the #3 Los Angeles Dodgers. The St. Louis Cardinals finished the regular season at 69-93 good for 5th in the NL East and the Padres finished 84-78 which was 4th in the NL West. The Cardinals send John Denny (14-11 2.96 Grade 14) to the mound versus veteran Gaylord Perry (21-6 2.73 Grade 15).
