Game 1 – 1978 Tournament Replay Mets vs Cubs

Game 1

This second round match features the #23 New York Mets, who defeated the #22 Atlanta Braves, and the #15 Chicago Cubs. The winner of this series will go onto to face the #2 Boston Red Sox in the Sweet 16. The Mets finished the season 66-96 and finished 6th in the NL East and the Cubs 79-83 and third in the NL East. The Mets send Pat Zachry (10-6 3.33 Grade 8) to the mound vs the Cubs Rick Reuschel (14-15 3.41 Grade 12). The Cubs would get to Zachry in the first inning with 2 runs and another 2 spot in the 4th to take a 4-0 lead. It would stay that way until the Mets get on the board with 2 in the 6th with a 2 out pinch hit double by Joel Youngblood. With the score 4-2 Cubs in the 8th the Mets would score 3 runs with RBI hits by Steve Henderson, Joel Youngblood (who stayed in the game), and Lenny Randle off Cub reliever Lynn McGlothen. The Mets would hold onto the lead as Dale Murray would strike out Dave Kingman with 2 on in the bottom of the 9th. Mets lead 1-0.
