Game 3 – 1978 Tournament Replay Padres vs Cardinals

Game 3 is a must win for the Cardinals at home and they send righty Pete Vuckovich (12-12 2.54 Grade 15) to the hill against Eric Rasmussen (12-10 4.06 Grade 6) for the Padres. The Padres would strike first with a 2 out RBI from Gene Tenace. The Cards would score 2 runs in the 4th and the 5th, while the Padres would score 3 (Oscar Gamble bug 3 run homer) in the 5th. After 5 innings we would be tied at 4. The Cards finally took the lead in the 6th scoring a run after a big double by Keith Hernandez. The Padres would counter quickly though taking the lead back with 2 in the 7th. The Padres go to their strength, the bullpen, but this time it was not to be. The Cardinals go for 4 runs in the bottom of the 7th, including big extra base hits from Garry Templeton, Ted Simmons, and a homer from Keith Hernandez. This time the Cards bullpen holds the lead and we are heading to a game 4 with the Padres leading 2-1.

Final Score: Cardinals 9, Padres 6
