Game 4 – 1978 Tournament Replay White Sox vs Tigers

Game 4 a must win for the White Sox as they send veteran Wilbur Wood (10-10 5.20 Grade 2), while the Tigers counter with a veteran of their own in Jack Billingham (15-8 3.88 Grade 8). This game was nuts, total insanity. The Tigers get a quick run in the first via sac fly from Rusty Staub. The White Sox would strike hard in the 3rd with a 6 spot. 3 run homer by Eric Soderholm the big blow. The score would remain 6-1 all the way until the top of the 8th until the Tigers bat around, knock Wood out of the game and plate 5 to tie the game. RBI’s by Whitaker, Staub, and Thompson the key hits. The Tigers weren’t done as they come back for 3 more off Jim Willoughby in the top of the ninth. The Tigers would bring on closer John Hiller but it would matter not. The White Sox get a RBI double by Soderholm and then a two out 2 run homer by Chet Lemon to tie the game. In extras the Tigers once again bat around against the bullpen of Chicago. Milt May once again with a big 2 run double. Hiller would rebound and get them 1-2-3 in the 10th for the win and the series clincher. Wow what a game!

Final Score: Tigers 14, White Sox 9

WP: John Hiller (1-0)

LP: Jim Willoughby (0-1)

HR’s: Chicago – Eric Soderholm (2), Chet Lemon (1)

Detroit wins 3-1
