The Giants hoping that Candlestick Park will change their fortune sends John Montefusco (11-9 3.81 Grade 8) to the mound against right Larry Christenson (13-14 3.24 Grade 12).
The Giants would grab the lead in the 2nd, scoring 3 runs. Terry Whitfield with a 2 run homer being the big blow. The Phillies would scratch across a run in the 5th to make it 3-1. Giants quickly got that run back in the 6th via RBI double by Jim Dwyer. They also added 2 more runs in the 7th to take a commanding 6-1 lead. The score would remain that way until the top of the 6th, then a crazy top of the 9th would ensue. Garry Maddox would lead off the 9th with a single and then Bob Boone would hit a 2 run homer to left to chase Montefusco. With the Giants up 6-3 they would turn to their pen. Gary Lavelle would come in and give up two quick singles before finally getting an out. With runners on 1st and 2nd Lavelle would walk Bowa to load the bases, then Mike Schmidt to bring in a run, and Greg Luzinski to bring in another. Lavelle would recover to strike out Hebner, then the Giants would bring in Randy Moffitt to face Boone whom had already homered in the inning. Boone would line a 2 run single to give the Phillies the 7-6 lead. The Phillies would bring on Ron Reed for the final 3 outs and the crazy comeback was complete.
