Game 3 – 1978 Tournament Replay Orioles vs Pirates

We are at Three Rivers for Game 3. The Pirates, needing a win bad, sends lefty John Candelaria (12-11 3.24 Grade 11) ti the hill opposite Dennis Martinez (16-11 3.52 Grade 12).

Pirates would finally grab a lead as Willie Stargell doubles in Frank Taveras. The Orioles would answer back in a big way scoring 2 in the second and 3 in the third. Rick Dempsey hitting a 3 run shot off Candelaria in the 3rd. With the score 5-1 the Pirates chipped away at the lead with 2 in the 3rd. Taveras and Stargell with RBI. They would tie it in the 7th with 2 more runs. Taveras again and Dave Parker with RBI singles.

With the score tied at 5 we would go to extras. The Orioles could not score in the top half of the 10th. The Pirates would get a lead off double by Stargell. Mario Mendoza would pinch run and John Milner would get the sacrifice down. The Orioles then walked the bases loaded and Rennie Stennett would get a base hit off Don Stanhouse through the drawn in infield to give the Pirates the dramatic come from behind victory and get them right back in this series. Orioles lead series 2-1.

Final Score: Pirates 6, Orioles 5 (10)
