Game 1 – 1978 Tournament Replay Phillies vs Yankees

The Elite 8 is here and we have a great matchup to start it off. The NL East Champs Philadelphia Phillies versus the World Champion New York Yankees.

Game 1 featured a classic matchup of lefties. New York sends Cy Young winner Ron Guidry (25-3 1.74 Grade 24) vs Steve Carlton (16-13 2.84 Grade 15) for the Phillies.

Well two stud pitchers on the mound and the hitters where no match. Guidry and Carlton both go 10 scoreless innings. Carlton only allowed 3 hits while striking out 5. Guidry was almost unhittable as he gives up 1 hit while striking out 8. Masterful performances.

The starters would give way to the bullpens. Goose Gossage would pitch 2 strong innings. In the bottom of the 11th the Yankees would get a Bucky Dent walk and then Ron Reed would commit an error on his own behalf to allow runners in scoring position. Lou Piniella would end the game with a single up the middle and the Yankees would win 1-0 in Game 1.

Final Score: Yankees 1, Phillies 0

WP: Goose Gossage (1-0)

LP: Ron Reed (0-1)
