Game 1 – 1978 Tournament Replay Padres vs Red Sox

This Final Four matchup features the Cinderella #14 seed San Diego Padres versus the #2 Boston Red Sox.

The Padres send lefty starter Randy Jones (13-14 2.88 Grade 14) versus Luis Tiant (13-8 3.31 Grade 11) for the Red Sox.

The game was scoreless through 3 and then the Padres scored 2 in the 4th as Gene Richards hits a 2 run homer off Tiant. The Padres would add another run in the 6th via solo home run by Oscar Gamble. In the 8th the Padres would score again as Gamble would double home a run to give the Padres a 4-0 lead. The Red Sox would finally score in the bottom of the 8th as Rick Burleson would deliver a RBI hit.

The Padres would get that run back in the 9th as Gene Tenace would double home Ozzie Smith. The Red Sox would get a 2 run homer by Carl Yastrzemski but Rollie Fingers would come in to get the final 2 outs to give the Padres the win.
