Game 5 – 1978 Tournament Replay Red Sox vs Padres

Must win game 5 for the Red Sox as they send Luis Tiant (13-8 3.31 Grade 11) to the mound opposite Randy Jones (13-14 2.88 Grade 14).

The Red Sox jump out quick against Jones and get 2 in the first as Jim Rice hits a 2 run homer. The Padres would answer with a run of their own via solo homer Oscar Gamble. The Padres would tie it at 2 in the 5th as unbelievably Ozzie Smith homers again. His second homer of the playoffs. The score would remain tied until the 8th when Rice again would come through with an RBI single. The Sox would get an insurance run in the 9th as Dwight Evans would single home Jack Brohamer. Bob Stanley would take care of the rest and the Red Sox force Game 6 back in Red Sox.

Final Score: Red Sox 4, Padres 2

WP: Luis Tiant (2-2)

LP: Randy Jones (5-1)

Save: Bob Stanley (5)

HR’s: Red Sox – Jim Rice (6), Padres – Oscar Gamble (4), Ozzie Smith (2)
