Winner take all Game 7 for the right to face the Yankees in the finals. The Padres start Bob Owchinko (10-13 3.56 Grade 9) versus Dennis Eckersley (20-8 2.99 Grade 14).
The Red Son would jump out quick as Carl Yastrzemski delivers a 2 run homer off Owchinko. The score would remain 2-0 until the 6th when Jim Rice would homer yet again to give the Red Sox a 3-0 lead. The Padres would get a run in the 7th on an RBI ground out by Jerry Turner. The Padres would again strike in the 9th. Dave Winfield would lead off the inning with a solo homer off Eckersley to end his day. The Sox would bring in Bob Stanley but he could not stop this Cinderella run. Gene Tenace would double and then Turner would double him home to tie the game at 3. With the game tied at 3, Broderick Perkins and Oscar Gamble would get 2 out singles to score 2 more runs to make it 5-3. Rollie Fingers gets them 1-2-3 in the 9th to complete the massive upset. No Red Sox/Yankees series for the title.
