1978 Tournament Final Game 1 – Padres vs Yankees

78 Tourney Finals #14 San Diego Padres vs #1 New York Yankees from Yankee Stadium.

The Padres send Gaylord Perry (21-6 2.73 Grade 15) to the mound versus Ed Figueroa (20-9 2.99 Grade 15). On paper a pitcher matchup and it didn’t disappoint. The Yankees would scratch out a run in the 4th as Chris Chambliss doubles in Reggie Jackson. The Padres would get that run back in the 6th as Dave Winfield would provide a sacrifice fly to score Ozzie Smith.

Pitchers would take over as we would remain scoreless the rest of the way and head to extra innings. Rollie Fingers and Goose Gossage both come in and get 9 outs a piece. The bullpens would continue to put up 0’s until the 16th. The Padres would score 3 runs off Catfish Hunter, Fernando Gonzalez with a huge 2 RBI triple. Bob Shirley would sit them down in the bottom half and the Padres strike first and hand the Yankees only their second loss of the playoffs.

Final Score: Padres 4, Yankee 1

WP: Bob Shirley (2-0)

LP: Catfish Hunter (1-1)

HR’s: None
