1978 Tournament Final Game 5 – Yankees vs Padres

Must win Game 5 for the Padres has a pitching matchup of Ed Figueroa (20-9 2.99 Grade 15) versus Gaylord Perry (21-6 2.73 Grade 15).

Great pitching matchup but the teams brought their bats early. Yankees strike for 4 runs in the first, Graig Nettles with a 2 run double and Chris Chambliss with a big 2 run homer. The Padres answer with 2 in the bottom half as Dave Winfield hits a run homer to center. The Padres would get 2 more in the 4th to tie the game. Bill Almon doubles in a run and Fernando Gonzalez drives in Almon.

The score would remain 4-4 until the 8th as the Yankees would push across 3 runs. Graig Nettles double the big hit. The Yankees bring in Gossage one more time in the 9th and the New York Yankees are 1978 Tournament Champions!!

Final Score: Yankees 7, Padres 4

LP: Gaylord Perry (5-1)

Save: Goose Gossage (6)

HR’s: Yankees – Chris Chambliss (1), Padres – Dave Winfield (6)
