Game 2 of the 1984 NLCS from Wrigley features Mark Thurmond (14-8 2.97 Grade 13) for the Padres versus Steve Trout (13-7 3.41 Grade 11) for the Cubbies.
Another strong outing by both starters as this game we go scoreless through 5 innings. The Cubs would get on the board with a run in the 6th courtesy of a 2 out triple by Ryne Sandberg. Trout would keep the Cubs off the board until the 8th when pinch hitter Kurt Bevacqua would line a double to score Garry Templeton and Alan Wiggins would single to score Bevacqua.
With the score 2-1 Padres going into the bottom of the 8th the Padres employed the same tactic as they did in Game 1. Craig Lefferts would take care of the 8th and Goose Gossage would get them in the 9th, striking out 2. Padres win and take a commanding 2-0 lead back to Jack Murphy Stadium.
