1984 Playoff Replay – ALCS Game 2 – Tigers vs Royals

Game 2 with the Tigers leading 1-0 has Dan Petry (18-8 3.24 Grade 13) on the mound opposite 20 year old Bret Saberhagen (10-11 3.48 Grade 8).

Pitchers again come out strong as we go scoreless through 3 innings. The Tigers would get a run as Kirk Gibson would walk, steal second, and advance to third on a throwing error by Don Slaught. Lance Parrish would hit a long fly to center that would score Gibson for the 1-0 lead. Score would remain 1-0 until the 8th and Johnny Grubb would take Saberhagen deep to center for a 2-0 lead. That would be more than enough for Petry as he would match Morris by scattering 3 hits for the shutout.

Final Score: Tigers 2, Royals 0

WP: Dan Petry (1-0)

LP: Bret Saberhagen (0-1)

HR’s: Johnny Grubb (1)

Royals only have 6 hits in 2 games of the series against Tiger starters.
