1984 Playoff Replay – World Series Game 5 – Padres at Tigers

Must win Game 5 for the Padres, while the Tigers want to win the championship in front of their home fans. The Padres will send Mark Thurmond (14-8 2.97 Grade 13Z) versus Dan Petry (18-8 3.24 Grade 13YZ).

The Tigers trying for the clinching win come out strong scoring one in the first courtesy a long homer by Alan Trammell. In the second they would get to Thurmond and knock him out of the game. Marty Castillo  would provide a sac fly, Lou Whitaker would single home a run, and with the bases loaded Trammell would triple to the gap to give the Tigers a huge 6-0 lead. Score would remain 6-0 into the 6th when the Tigers would strike again. Trammell one more time would double in a run and Kirk Gibson would single in two more. Trammell would finish a single short of the cycle.

The Padres bats would not show as Petry would go all 9, scattering 4 hits in a series clinching shoutout. The Tigers followed a great regular season with a sweep of the Royals in the ALCS and a 4-1 World Series win in our replay. Detroit Tigers 1984 World Champs.
