Game 1 – 1985 Tournament Replay White Sox vs Reds

In this Sweet 16 matchup the #9 Chicago White Sox face off against the #8 Cincinnati Reds. The Reds finished the season 89-72 and finished 2nd in the NL West. The White Sox finished 85-77 and 3rd in the AL West.


Game 1 from Riverfront Stadium features a pitching matchup of Tom Seaver (16-11 3.17 Grade 14YZ) for the White Sox and lefty Tom Browning (20-9 3.55 Grade 13YZ) for the White Sox. The White Sox would strike first as they would get a sac fly from Greg Walker and a 2 out RBI by Carlton Fisk in the 3rd. The Reds would answer back with a run of their own in the bottom half as Buddy Bell would drive in Eddie Milner. In the 4th Luis Salazar would go big fly off Browning to give the Sox a 3-1 lead. The score would remain that until the 8th and once again Salazar would go deep, this time off Ted Power.


The Reds would try to get back in the game as they would score a run in the bottom of the 8th and 9th, but Bob James comes in and closes the door for the save. The White Sox wrest home field from the Reds and take a 1-0 lead in the series.
