Game 1 – 1985 Tournament Replay Red Sox at Blue Jays

This Sweet 16 matchup features the #15 Boston Red Sox versus the #2 Toronto Blue Jays. The Red Sox finished 81-81 and 5th in the AL East. The Blue Jays finished 99-62 and first in the East.

 

The Red Sox send Oil Can Boyd (15-13 3.70 Grade 11YZ) to the mound while the Blue Jays send Dave Stieb (14-13 2.48 Grade 16Y). Pitchers come out strong but the Blue Jays would get a run int he 3rd as Tony Fernandez doubles in Ernie Whitt. The Red Sox would answer in the 4th with a 2 spot. Glenn Hoffman would double in Mike Easler and Tony Armas. In the 5th the Sox would get another as Jim Rice hits a solo home run.

 

In the 7th the Sox would get 2 insurance runs as Hoffman singles in a run and Dwight Evans singles in another. The Blue Jays would get a run in the 9th but Boyd would be too tough going the distance only allowing 6 hits. Red Sox get a huge Game 2 win.
