I figured going into this series it had the potential to be good and it was. The upstart Mets who won 98 games and the defending World Series champs. The difference was that the Mets had a deeper bullpen and got clutch hitting from the bottom of their lineup. Highlight of the series was games 5 and 6 where we had late game homer heroics in both games. The Mets will move onto to face the winner of the Toronto Blue Jays and the Montreal Expos series. Game 6 back at Shea has the Tigers sending Dan Petry (15-13 3.36 Grade 12Z) against Sid Fernandez (9-9 2.80 Grade 10XY).   The Mets would get the first run of the game as Darryl Strawberry would hit yet another homer, this time the solo variety off Petry. Fernandez would cruise through the first 3 innings striking out 7 of the first 9 batters to face him. In the 4th the Tigers would start putting the bat on the ball and get a triple from Alan Trammell. Kirk Gibson would follow with the RBI single and Lance Parrish would double in Gibson to give the Tigers the 2-1 lead. Game 5 from Tiger Stadium with the Mets leading 3 games to 1 features a pitching matchup of Ed Lynch (10-8 3.44 Grade 10Z) for the Mets and ace Jack Morris (16-11 3.33 Grade 13Y) for the Tigers.   The Tigers with their backs against the wall come out and get 2 quick runs off Lynch in the first. Lance Parrish and Darrell Evans with RBI. In the 2nd the Mets would get those runs right back as Rafael Santana doubles in George Foster and Lenny Dykstra. The score would remain 2-2 until the 6th when the Mets would move in front with a run. The Mets trying for a 3-1 series lead send Ron Darling (16-6 2.90 Grade 15Y) to the hill against lefty Frank Tanana (12-14 4.27 Grade 5YZ).   This one got out of hand early as the Mets explode for 6 runs in the 2nd. Huge RBI hits by Mookie Wilson, Ray Knight, Rafael Santana lead the way along with a huge fielding error by Alan Trammell. The Tigers would not just lay down, they come back with 4 big runs in the 3rd. Lou Whitaker singles in Nelson Simmons and later Lance Parrish would drill a 3 run homer off Darling.   The Mets would get one of those runs right back in the 4th as Gary Carter would again get a big 2 out hit. Series is tied at 1 apiece as we head to Tiger Stadium for games 3, 4, and 5. The Tigers send Walt Terrell (15-10 3.85 Grade 8YH) to the mound as the Mets send Cy Young winner Dwight Gooden (24-4 1.53 Grade 25 XYZ).   The Mets strike first as Ray Knight delivers a 2 out single to score Darryl Strawberry. In the 4th Knight again would deliver with 2 outs. This time a single to center to score Lenny Dyskstra. In the 5th they would get another run as Mookie Wilson would score on a double play ball.   With the score 3-0 Mets and Gooden cruising with 7 K's through 5, the Tigers would get 2 men on in the 5th.
