The Dodgers come out strong winning the first 3 games of the series. The Astors showed no quit in winning games 4 and 5. Bob Welch would pitch a gem in Game 6 to get the Dodgers over the hump and into the Final Four. The Dodgers got just enough hitting to go along with their usual stellar pitching. The Astros keep the series alive by winning Game 4 and send Nolan Ryan (10-12 3.80 Grade 10XG) to the mound against lefty Jerry Reuss (14-10 2.92 Grade 14Z) for LA.   The Astros again get the lead as they score 3 big runs in the 2nd. After a single by Phil Garner and double by Alan Ashby, Jerry Mumphrey would line a Reuss fastball over the fence in left. Game 4 with the Dodgers up 3-0 in the series features a pitching matchup of Orel Hershiser (19-3 2.03 Grade 20YZ) for the Dodgers and Bob Knepper (15-13 3.55 Grade 11Z) for the Astros.   The Astros would finally grab an early lead with 2 quick runs off Hershiser in the 1st. Glenn Davis would double home Jose Cruz and Dickie Thon. The Dodgers would get one run back in the 2nd and the other in the 3rd as Mariano Duncan scores on an error by Jerry Mumphrey. We are back at the Astrodome for Game 3 and the Astros send Ron Mathis (3-5 6.04 Grade 1) to the mound opposite Fernando Valenzuela (17-10 2.45 Grade 19XG).   On paper this felt like a mis-match and it turned out to be that way as the Dodgers jump on Mathis for 4 quick runs in the first to knock him out of the game. Pedro Guerrero drives in 2 runs and Bill Madlock and Ken Landreaux also get RBI hits. From there it was all Fernando. He would take a no hitter into the 8th but pinch hitter Craig Reynolds would end the no-no with a single to center. Game 2 with the Dodgers leading 1-0 has a pitching matchup of Mike Scott (18-8 3.29 Grade Y) to the bump against Bob Welch (14-4 2.31 Grade 14YZ).   The Dodgers once again come out strong with a big inning, this time 4 runs in the 2nd. RBI hits by Mike Scioscia and Pedro Guerrero aided by 2 Astro errors. The Astros could get nothing going against Welch as he only allowed 5 hits through 8. The Astros would try to get something going in the 9th with back to back doubles by Glenn Davis and Phil Garner.
