Game 6 – 1985 Tournament Replay Mets @ Blue Jays

The Blue Jays back home down 3-2 send their ace Dave Stieb (14-13 2.48 Grade 16Y) to the mound against righty Ron Darling (16-6 2.90 Grade 15Y).

What a great pitching classic this game was! Stieb would work out of trouble the first 4 innings as the Mets would strand 5 runners. Darling would not allow a hit until the 6th when the Blue Jays would get 2 singles and have 1st and 3rd but he would Lloyd Moseby into a ground out. In the 8th the Blue Jays again would get 2 on against Darling but he would get the 6-4-3 double play from Tony Fernandez. Each starter goes 9 scoreless innings before giving way to the bullpen.

In the 11th Wally Backman would lead off the inning with a single to left off Dennis Lamp. Backman would get a good lead and take off for second just beating the throw from Ernie Whitt. With Backman on second now and no out Keith Hernandez lays down a perfect sac bunt to get Backman to third with one out. With the infield in Gary Carter would take the Lamp pitch deep to left to bring home Backman on a sac fly. So perfect ABC baseball by the Mets gets them the lead going into the bottom half.

Roger McDowell would get the first 2 men in the 11th and then Fernandez would line a double to left center. With the tying run in scoring position McDowell would get Damaso Garcia to ground out to 3rd and the Mets are moving on to the finals to face the Dodgers in what should be a great final. Could be some low scoring games in this final as both staffs are stacked. Can’t wait to see how it goes.

Final Score: Mets 1, Blue Jays 0

WP: Roger McDowell (2-1)

LP: Dennis Lamp (0-1)

HR’s: None
