1985 Tournament Results – Mets beat Blue Jays in 6

1985, 1985 Tournament, Blue Jays, Mets
When I set up the bracket, this was a series I was hoping would pan out. The Blue Jays had such a good team in 85 and a matchup with them and the up and coming 98 win Mets would be fun. It turned out to be a very good series and fun to play. The Blue Jays could not get any hits with runners in scoring position, and scored 1 run or fewer in 4 of the 6 games. Gooden was his normal dominate self and the Mets would win both games Toronto ace Dave Stieb pitched. The Mets will now move on to face the Los Angeles Dodgers in what could be a pitching classic as both rotations are real good. Can the Dodgers muster enough offense to…

The Blue Jays back home down 3-2 send their ace Dave Stieb (14-13 2.48 Grade 16Y) to the mound against righty Ron Darling (16-6 2.90 Grade 15Y). What a great pitching classic this game was! Stieb would work out of trouble the first 4 innings as the Mets would strand 5 runners. Darling would not allow a hit until the 6th when the Blue Jays would get 2 singles and have 1st and 3rd but he would Lloyd Moseby into a ground out. In the 8th the Blue Jays again would get 2 on against Darling but he would get the 6-4-3 double play from Tony Fernandez. Each starter goes 9 scoreless innings before giving way to the bullpen.   In the 11th Wally Backman would lead off the inning…

Pivotal Game 5 with the series tied at 2 has a pitching matchup of Jim Clancy (9-6 3.78 Grade 5ZG) for the Blue Jays and Dwight Gooden (24-4 1.53 Grade 25XYZG).   The Mets would start the scoring in Game 5 as they would pick up 2 runs in the second. Lenny Dykstra and Wally Backman (again) driving in runs with RBI singles. Clancy would settle and match Gooden with 0's on the board. The Blue Jays would get their first hit in the 4th as Garth Iorg would get a single and would advance to second. Blue Jays get back in the series with a win in Game 3 and they send Jimmy Key (14-6 3.00 Grade 14Z) to the hill opposite Sid Fernandez (9-9 2.80 Grade 10XY).   The Blue Jays would finally strike first as they pick up a run in the 3rd as Garth Iorg singles in Tony Fernandez. In the bottom of the 4th the Mets would get that run right back as Darryl Strawberry connects again in this tournament. The pitchers would settle in after that and lock this game down as we would go to the 9th still 1-1.   In the top of the 9th, Jesse Barfield would draw a walk and Willie Upshaw would take the Fernandez offering over the centerfield wall for a 3-1 lead. Mets take both games in Toronto and send Ed Lynch (10-8 3.44 Grade 10Z) to the mound against Doyle Alexander (17-10 3.45 Grade 13Z).   Once again the Mets come out and get a lead as Gary Carter gets a 2 out single to score Lenny Dykstra. We would remain 1-0 until the 6th when the Jays bats would finally come alive. The Jays would bat around and score 6 runs as Lloyd Moseby would drive in 2 runs and Jesse Barfield and Willie Upshaw would also add RBI hits.   With the Blue Jays ahead 6-1 Alexander would take care of the rest as he would go the distance only allowing 4 hits as the Jays get a much needed win to get back into this series.   Final…
