The Mets with their backs against the wall send David Cone (20-3 2.33 Grade 19XZ) to the mound against Tim Leary (17-11 2.91 Grade 14XZ).
The Mets would come out and grab a quick lead as they get 2 on the board in the top of the 1st. Lenny Dykstra singles and steals second, Keith Hernandez singles in Dykstra, and Darryl Strawberry triples high off the right center field wall. Leary would get out of the inning with no more damage when Kirk Gibson throws out Strawberry at the plate. Cone was in complete control getting strikeouts, and ground balls when he needs it. Mets infielders turn 3 double plays. Dodger pitching would keep the game 2-0 Mets until the bottom of the 9th. Gibson would lead off the 9th with a long homer to right to make it a 1 run game. The Mets stay with Cone and he rewards them by sitting the next 3 batters down in order to secure the win and a Game 7 meeting for a trip to the World Series.
Final Score: Mets 2, Dodgers 1
WP: David Cone (2-0)
LP: Tim Leary (0-1)
HR’s: Dodgers – Kirk Gibson (1)
