Game 3 is a must win for the A's as they send Rick Langford to the mound. Winning will not be easy against Grade 15 Pete Vuchovich. After only scoring 3 runs in the first 2 games the A's quickly out a 2 spot on the board from a 2 run homer by Jim Essian (only had 3 entire regular season). Would turn out to be a big hit as Langford would only give up 1 run in 7 strong innings. The A's would add insurance runs in the 4th and 6th and Elias Sosa would come on to pitch 2 innings for the save. The A's are now back in the series and they will look to even it up in game 4. The Cardinals picked up game one but the A's still have a chance to steal home field with a win in Game 2. The A's sent John Henry Johnson to the mound countered by Bob Forsch for the Cards. Both teams get on the board early as the Cardinals get in a run in the bottom of the 1st and the A's got a run in the top of the 3rd. After St. Louis gets an RBI single from Mike Tyson in the 4th the A's finally grab a lead with 2 in the top of the 6th helped by an error by Jerry Mumphrey. The 22 seed Oakland Athletics versus the 21 St. Louis Cardinals are the next match up in the play in round. The A's finished the season 69-93 and finished in 6th in the American Leagues West, while the Cardinals had a record of 69-93 and finished 5th in the National League East. The Cardinals started righty John Denny (14-11 2.96 Grade 14), the A's countered with right hander Matt Keough (8-15 3.24 Grade 12).
